Social media is rapidly becoming extremely important in this day and age. The Heart of Danville and the Convention & Visitors Bureau have teamed up for a Social Media Awareness campaign to help our downtown businesses. We have handed out social media cards that stores and restaurants can pass out to their patrons. These cards have instructions on how to post reviews on popular sites such as Yelp and UrbanSpoon. While we can market and promote until we’re blue in the face, we have a great example of how important social media is to small businesses. While in town last week, international musician, Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble, visited V The Market. And how did he find out about V The Market, you ask? Simple…he found them on Yelp! Yo-Yo Ma in Danville Kentucky at Centre College V The Market.

While it wasn’t the first thing out of Yo-Yo’s mouth, it was pretty close: “We found you on Yelp, and we’d like to come have lunch at your place.”

Yo-Yo called Thursday at 10 in the morning, right before he walked on stage to perform for the students at Danville High. He asked for a spread for 20 people – fine cheese, charcuterie, some champagne – so Wayne and I hopped into action, and within an hour we prepared a spread that surprised even us.

As someone who works for a small business, I don’t underestimate the importance of social media. The invaluable review website brought a renowned American cellist and his entire ensemble to our doorstep. When you post a review on social media sites, everyone wins. For a business, it’s free advertising; for patrons, it’s an unbiased resource for reviews.
