Kiplinger’s names best cities for young singles

Lexington, KY came in at #5

Kiplinger magazine has published a new list of the top 25 cities in America for each stage of life.

Young singles have tight budgets so affordability was a major factor in choosing its top five cities in that category. Here’s what Kiplinger said: “The cities that ranked highly for young singles score well on rental affordability and have a high number of bars and restaurants per capita. Each area also scored highly on the bohemian index — a measure of the city’s diversity and cultural amenities.”

The city was noted for having “all the things you’d expect to find in Kentucky: beautiful horse farms, bourbon distilleries and crazed University of Kentucky basketball fans,” as well as a few unexpected treasures including “a thriving underground music and arts scene.”

Nothing matches the vibe of a college town. Universities throw off an energy that infuses their communities with culture, creativity and a love of learning. No wonder such places draw so many retirees. Living in a college town can be a smart financial move, too. Compared with life in a big city, you’ll save on everything from housing to recreation.

We chose five great college towns that not only take full advantage of what the local university has to offer, but also stand on their own merits. Each has theaters, galleries and adult-education courses outside the university, not to mention excellent health care, reasonable living costs, pleasant winters and a community of active retirees who refuse to put their lives on cruise control.
