Keeneland one of our best events here in Kentucky April and October
Keeneland, one of our best events here in Kentucky is coming right up! I want to tell a little bit about Keeneland – and oh yes, a new recipe! What could be better than this? Keeneland one of our best events here in Kentucky April and October
We are on for one of the most beautiful events in the world – the races at Keeneland! The cool thing is it is held at one of the most beautiful places on earth here in Lexington, KY. Keeneland Racetrack will host owners, trainers and guests from all around the world to watch the races which are held only three weeks in April and three weeks in October. The horses are racing all throughout the day.
Keeneland is a big deal here in Kentucky - all the major sponsors are there including Rolex, Mercedes, our buddies at Makers Mark Distillery. As many of you know, I am a Makers Mark Ambassador – which means we get invited to lots of great events – like Keeneland. KYLandSales and Makers Mark Ambassadors will have a special area at Keeneland and we would like you to join us. Come see the area, join us for an afternoon at the track, sip a little Kentucky Bourbon and see why we love the Bluegrass.
Note – I highly recommend placing your wagers BEFORE imbibing in too much Makers! click on this link to see our new properties: http://www.BluegrassTeam.com/
The neat thing is that Keeneland is so small and intimate, it is like your very own track. You can stand right on the rail – at the finish line and feel the thunder as the thoroughbreds race by. Watching these amazing animals fly through the air, just muscle and grace, then feeling the pounding of their hooves in your chest – it is a very exciting experience.
Come feel the thunder with us and enjoy this awesome time with friends and family. http://www.keeneland.com
You always get a recipe from me – how about starting off with a Mint Julep first? Now, we all have heard about the Kentucky Mint Julep – doesn’t it sound light and airy? I thought so too – until I found out what it really is. The mint julep may be sipped by ladies in big hats, but it is a no bs drink, hard-core and super flavorful.
Bad bourbon is bad – so just throw that out, but good bourbon is like heaven – oakey, smokey, and smooth – like butter. Maker’s is one of our favorites here in KY
Kentucky Mint Julep:
4 cups Makers Mark bourbon
2 bunches fresh spearmint
1 cup distilled water
1 cup granulated sugar
Powdered sugar http://www.makersmark.com/
To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper towels. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times. To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool. To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon. Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste—generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it’s right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to “marry” the flavors.
To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a sterling silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a sprig of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep. When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately – Ambrosia!
