Wilderness Trace

The first paths blazed through wilderness in central Kentucky were “traces” – notches axed into trees to make the route. Often these traces followed trails cut by the hooves of buffalo or tramped down by the feet of Indians. In 1775, Daniel Boone blazed a trail to Kentucky and with 30 axe men cut a path by joining up buffalo trails and Indian tracks to form the first continuous route through the Cumberland Gap. Others followed part way along this pioneer route before blazing their own traces toward different destinations. In time these early traces became known by the names of the men originally responsible for them; Boone Trace, Skaggs Trace and Logan Trace, among others.

Colonel Benjamin Logan, a Virginian seeking fortune in Kentucky, was chiefly responsible for the trace that bore his name. Logan had come through the mountains with Daniel Boone but struck west from Buffalo Spring while Boone went north to found Boonesboro on the Kentucky River. Logan’s Trace led to the banks of a creek near a spring where he built a fort that he called St. Asaph’s, who was a Welsh saint traditionally honored on May 1, the day construction on the fort began.

St. Asaph’s soon became better known as Logan’s Fort or Logan’s Station. May 20,1777, brought a fierce Indian attack on the wilderness fort, but one which those inside successfully resisted. This resistance caused the tiny fort to be described as “standing fort,” and it is said the contraction of this into “Stanford” gave the town its present name. Stanford is the county seat of Lincoln County, one of the first three counties into which Kentucky was divided in 1780 while still part of Virginia. Lincoln County got its name from Benjamin Lincoln, a Revolutionary War general from Massachusetts.

In 1774, 20 miles to the north. Captain James Harrod and a rugged band of pioneer adventurers laid out a settlement now known as Harrodsburg. credited as the oldest permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. Harrodsburg became a county seat in 1785 with the organization of Mercer County, named for another Revolutionary War general, Hugh Mercer, who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777.

Lying in the middle of the Wilderness Trace counties is Boyle, the youngest of the three, having been organized in 1842 from parts of Mercer and Lincoln counties. Boyle County gets its name from John Boyle, a well-known Kentucky judge in the early 1800′s. Boyle is the smallest of the three counties in the area, but with more than 25,000 people it has a larger population than either Mercer or Lincoln. Its county seat, Danville, rivals Stanford and Harrodsburg in age, all three being among the oldest cities in Kentucky. Danville was plotted in 1784 by Walker Daniel, a young Virginia lawyer, and named for him.

Some of the wilderness traces became important roads. The earliest of these was the famous Wilderness Road, provided for by an act of the Kentucky legislature in 1795. Its first link was a “Wagon Road” built from Cumberland Gap to Crab Orchard in Lincoln County during the spring and summer of 1796. Construction on The Wilderness Road began while Isaac Shelby, a Lincoln County resident, served as the first governor of the new state of Kentucky. Shelby’s home at Traveler’s Rest was noted for its hospitality. Later the resort area at Crab Orchard Springs became noted for its hospitality. During the century from 1830 to 1930, Crab Orchard Springs offered mineral waters and a gala social season to its guests, who often numbered more than 400 each night.

Today automobile Route 150 follows generally where The Wilderness Road once led. Along Route 150, a few miles south of Stanford, stands the William Whitley House, built beside The Wilderness Road and known as the first brick house west of the Alleghenies. Stanford’s Main Street was once part of the Wilderness Road. The old road passed the first county court house built in Kentucky and what is said to be the first church built in the state. The Harvey Helm Library and Museum is now housed in part of this building.

From Stanford, Route 150 goes north to Danville where it turns west to follow the city’s Main Street. Bordering on Danville’s Main Street is Constitution Square State Shrine where Kentucky’s first state constitution was written in 1792. Constitution Square contains a replica of the building in which the first constitution was written; a replica of the first Presbyterian Church in Kentucky; and the actual building that housed the first post office west of the Alleghenies. Here also is Governors Circle, depicting on metal plaques the faces of past and present governors of Kentucky. Across the street from Constitution Square is the McDowell House and Apothecary Shop where Dr. Ephraim McDowell earned his title as “The Father of Abdominal Surgery.” His name has been adopted by Danville’s Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Two blocks south of Constitution Square are the grounds of the Kentucky School for the Deaf, founded in 1823 as the first state-supported school in the United States for youngsters with hearing handicaps. Danville is also the home of Centre College, “the little giant among American schools,” founded in 1819 and now one of the most prestigious small liberal arts colleges in America. Among the imposing buildings on Centre’s campus is the Norton Center for the Arts, which is truly a regional art center. Not only Centre students but townspeople from miles around are able to enjoy the musical, dramatic and artistic attractions offered there.

On the east side of Danville, Route 150 passes the Pioneer Playhouse, perhaps the oldest summer theater in Kentucky, offering on its outdoor stage a series of Broadway plays. West of Danville, Route 150 leads to Perryville. Near Perryville is the Perryville Battlefield State Park, preserving the location of the biggest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Each October, on the weekend nearest the anniversary of the 1862 battle, Perryville acts as host for a re-enactment of the event.

From Danville, travelers can go to Harrodsburg on Route 127, once a trace, then an old military road, and recently called “The Bluegrass-Chicamauga Trail.” In Harrodsburg there is a replica of Old Fort Harrod, built beside Route 127 near the spot where the original fort stood. Within its timbered walls is evidence of the arduous life endured by Kentucky’s pioneer men and women. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited this site to dedicate a memorial to the pioneer spirit and the men who planned and led the expedition that seized the old Northwest Territory from the British during the Revolutionary War. Each summer in the 800-seat amphitheater at Old Fort Harrod State Park, “The Legend of Daniel Boone” is presented nightly except Sundays. Young actors from throughout the South portray the characters in this outdoor drama, which is based on people and events of Kentucky’s history.

Shakertown of Pleasant Hill, seven miles northeast of Harrodsburg, is another of Mercer County’s attractions. A religious sect called the Shakers lived at Pleasant Hill between 1808 and 1912. The buildings they occupied have been renovated and restored and are now open to the public. Distinctive Shaker meals are served in the village dining room and lodging is available in the restored Shaker buildings. Meals and lodging are also available during most of the year in Harrodsburg’s famed Beaumont Inn, which occupies the original site of Greenville Springs, a well-known spa and resort area that between 1806 and 1853 attracted visitors from Kentucky, from the deep South, and from abroad.

Business and Industry

Agriculture: Agriculture is the largest single economic activity in the Wilderness trace counties. Tobacco, beef cattle, grain and horses are significant contributors to the area’s wealth. County fairs festival days furnish opportunities for agricultural displays as well as for the display of art and craft products. The Mercer County Horse Show is considered on of the best in the South, annually attracting competitors from Kentucky and its neighboring states and from states as distant as Oklahoma and Florida.

Industry: Industry is becoming more apparent in the Wilderness Trace counties. All three counties have industrial parks with space available as sites for new industries. Lincoln County’s park contains 50 acres and eight industries are located either in the park or around Stanford. Mercer County has two hundred acres with land available for further expansion. The 11 manufacturing enterprises in and around Harrodsburg employ about 2,500 workers. Boyle County has the greatest concentration of industry, much of it located in the John Hill Bailey Industrial Park, 500 acres on the west side of Danville. The John Hill Bailey Children’s Learning Center, located at the edge of the park, was built by 18 Danville and Boyle County Businesses. The center employs 50 full-time workers and is licensed to care for 276 children. It provides an after-school program and 24-hour care. Boyle County industries employ over 4000 workers.

Parks and Recreation

Herrington Lake has become a mecca for those who enjoy fishing and water sports. The 3,600-acre lake was created in 1925 by the damming of Dix River. The Bright Leaf Resort area between Danville and Harrodsburg, the Old Bridge Country Club and the Danville Country Club offer opportunities for golf and tennis. These recreational facilities have combined with other attractions in Lincoln, Boyle and Mercer counties to make tourism an increasingly important endeavor.

August 12, 2010 By Leigh Ivey In Forbes magazine’s 2010 “America’s Best Colleges” rankings,
Centre was named the 24th best educational institution in the U.S.

“In the top 25 among all the nation’s colleges and universities, we
remain among good company as one of the best,” says Centre
president John Roush.

Centre College has been named the 24th best educational institution in the nation among colleges and universities in Forbesmagazine’s third-annual “America’s Best Colleges” rankings. The rankings include 610 schools from around the country.

“Whether they’re in the top 10 or near the end of the list, all 610 schools in this ranking count among the best in the country,” theForbes online article says. “We review just nine percent of the 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S., so appearing on our list at all is an indication that a school meets a high standard.”

Earlier this year, Forbes ranked Centre the No. 1 college or university in the South.

“We are delighted to see that Forbes once again identifies Centre as one of the nation’s best institutions of higher education,” says Centre President John Roush. “In the top 25 among all the nation’s colleges and universities, we remain among good company as one of the best.”

Roush continues: “These rankings, of course, do not tell the whole story of the many outstanding colleges and universities in America, but they can be valuable to students and families as they seek to identify those institutions that have an earned reputation for highest achievement. Centre is proud to be an institution where high achievement is prized and high opportunity for young men and women needing financial assistance to attend has been preserved.”

Centre’s No. 24 spot is the highest ranking of any Kentucky institution, with the next closest-ranked school appearing at No. 210 on the overall list. (For a complete list of Forbes-ranked Kentucky schools, click here.)

How these rankings work: Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity compiled its college rankings using five general categories, with several components within each general category. The weightings are as follows: student Satisfaction, 27.5 percent; postgraduate Success, 30 percent; student debt, 17.5 percent; four-year graduation rate, 17.5 percent; competitive awards, 7.5 percent.

“Americans spend more money on college education than nearly any other investment,” the article states. “Just as they want home inspectors to evaluate possible house purchases, and Consumer Reports or J.D. Power and Associates to help guide their car purchases, they look to information providers like Forbes to assist them in their choice of colleges and universities.”

The Forbes ranking is “designed to meet the needs of undergraduate students. It attempts to help them evaluate things that many believe are important criteria when selecting a college: Do students enjoy their classes and overall academic experience? Do graduates succeed well in their occupations after college? Do most students graduate in a timely fashion, typically four years? Do students incur massive debts while in schools? Do students succeed in distinguishing themselves academically?”

The latest Forbes ranking is one of many stellar rankings that Centre has received. Consumers Digest has named Centre the No. 1 educational value in the nation, and U.S. News consistently ranks Centre among the top 50 schools in the nation. (And Centre is the only Kentucky institution in this U.S. News top-50 ranking.) In addition, Centre recently was named an outstanding educational institution by The Princeton Review with Kentucky’s highest academic and selectivity ranking. Centre is also the only Kentucky institution to be named a top-30 value among liberal arts colleges by Kiplinger magazine.

Updated: Aug 11, 2010 11:54 AM

Kentucky wineries brought home 32 medals, including two double golds and five golds, at the Indy International Wine Competition in West Lafayette, Indiana last week.

“Throughout the country, wine lovers are discovering what we already know: Kentucky’s wine industry is back,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said.

Acres of Land Winery of Richmond earned double gold and Best of Class for its Concord wine (the second year in a row its Concord won Best of Class at Indy) along with a silver medal. Jean Farris Winery of Lexington picked up gold medals for its Petite Sirah (which also was Best of Class) and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as three bronze medals. Wight-Meyer Vineyard and Winery won double gold in the French-American Blush/Rosé class for its Diamond/Concord wine. Its Diamond wine earned a gold medal and Best of Class in the Diamond and American Late Harvest categories, and its Concord was a gold medal winner. The Shepherdsville winery also brought home four silver medals.

Other Kentucky wineries that won medals at Indy International were Black Barn Winery of Lexington, Black Oak Vineyard of Princeton, Chrisman Mill Vineyards and Winery of Nicholasville, Equus Run Vineyards of Midway, Horseshoe Bend Vineyards and Winery of Willisburg, Lovers Leap Vineyards and Winery of Lawrenceburg, Purple Toad Winery of Paducah, River Valley Winery of Carrollton, StoneBrook Winery of Camp Springs, Talon Winery and Vineyard of Lexington, and Wildside Winery of Versailles.

More than 50 judges evaluated commercial wines from 39 states and 12 countries at the Indy International competition, the largest scientifically organized and independent competition in the United States. A complete list of results is available at www.indyinternational.org/competition/2010/.

In July, three Kentucky wineries brought home 12 medals, including four golds, from the 2010 Mid-American Wine Competition in Ankeny, Iowa.

Harkness Edwards Vineyards of Winchester won three medals, including gold medals for its Vat 32 Viognier wine and for the wine’s label in the Most Unique category. Wight-Meyer won gold for its Diamond wine and earned five medals in all, the most among Kentucky wineries. Elk Creek Vineyards of Owenton won a gold medal for the Best Series label on its Orchard Creek Series and three bronze medals.

The fourth annual Mid-American Wine Competition on July 9-11 was open only to commercial wineries in Kentucky and 15 other states across the Midwest. Proceeds from the competition support the Enology International Internship program at Des Moines Area Community College, which hosted the event. Results of the 2010 competition are available at www.midamericanwine.org/.

6 Little Known Facts That Can Help You Buy Your First Farm Land or Home

The problem that most people face isn’t their ability to meet a monthly payment. Heaven knows that they must meet this monthly obligation every 30 days already right now. The problem is accumulating enough cash to make a down payment on something bigger – with more elbow room and more permanent.

Saving for this lump sum doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think. Consider the following 6 points:

1. You can buy a Farm or Home with much less down than you think

We are offering some land for sale at 3% down – call. There are some local or federal government programs (such as 1st time buyer programs) to help people get into the housing market. You may qualify as a first time buyer even if you’ve owned before – or your spouse has owned a home before as long as your name was not registered. Make sure your real estate agent is informed and knowledgeable in this important area and can offer programs to help you with your options. An agent who is unaware of this aspect of financing can kill a deal – your dream – in a heartbeat.

2. You may be able to get your lender to help you with your down payment and closing costs

Even if you do not have enough cash for a downpayment, if you are debt-free, and own an asset free and clear (such as a car for example), your lending institution may be able to lend you the downpayment for your home by securing it against this asset.

3. You may be able to find a seller to help you buy and finance your home

Some sellers may be willing to hold a 2nd mortgage for you as a “seller-carry 2nd”. In this case, the seller doesn’t become a “lender”, it is simply terms of the sale. Instead of paying this seller a lump-sum full amount for his or her home, you would pay monthly installments for as many years as your agent will help you negotiate.

4. You may be able to create a cash down payment without actually going into debt

By borrowing money for certain investments to a certain level, you may be able to generate a significant tax refund for yourself that you can use as a downpayment. While the money borrowed for these investments is technically a loan, the monthly amount paid can be small, and the money invested in both home and investment will be yours in the end. You may also be able to borrow against a 401k for real estate.

5. You can buy a home even if you have problems with your credit rating

A sharp mortgage broker will help you with credit repair and can see what items can be fixed – and quickly on your report. For instance, that pesky $300 medical bill that has been hanging around for years – that you didn’t pay, may jump your score 30-60 points if paid off immediately. This can make the difference – and “put you over the threshold” of ‘bad’ credit to good credit. Or if you can come up with more than the minimum down-payment, or can secure the loan with other equity, many lending institutions will consider you for a mortgage. Alternatively, a seller-carry mortgage could also help you in this situation.

6. You can, and should, get pre-approved for a home loan before you go looking for a Farm or a Home

Pre-approval is easy, and can give you complete peace-of-mind when shopping for your Farm or Home – Confidence too. Mortgage experts can obtain written pre-approval for you at no cost and no obligation, and it can all be done quite easily over-the-phone. More than just a verbal approval from your lender, a written pre-approval is a good negotiation tool. Consider dealing only with a professional who specializes in mortgages. Enlisting their services can make the difference between obtaining a mortgage, and being stuck in the renter’s rut forever. There is no cost or obligation to get pre-approved.

There are many important issues you should be aware of that affect you as a renter. Why on earth would you continue to lose thousands of dollars every year, by throwing it away on rent when, with your agent you could take a few minutes to discuss your specific needs so that you can stop renting and start owning – owning your Dream?

This conversation costs you nothing. And, of course, you shouldn’t have to feel obligated to buy a Farm or a Home at the time you review this.

By taking the time to explore your options, and learn about the ways you can afford to buy a Farm or a Home, think how prepared and relaxed you’ll be when you are ready to make this important step. Call Ken today 859-494-5521

Just a little Danville / Boyle County, Kentucky hospitality. Thank you JW Lynn for giving guests “a hug”.

FBO* of the Week: Danville/Boyle County Airport Board (KDVK, Danville, KY)

We saw plenty of great FBO* stories this week, but none that wowed us so much as AVweb reader Liza Kummer’s story of above-and-beyond service at Danville/Boyle County Airport Board, located at Stuart Powell Field (KDVK) in Danville, Kentucky:

We landed late at night enroute from Penn to Texas and stayed at the fabulous Hampton Inn. The lady with Sharon’s Car Service — Danville did not have taxis — waited an hour for us at the airport! It looked like we were going to be unable to fly the next day because of a scary-looking squall line with forecasts of hail.

I called the Danville, KY FBO early in the morning and asked if they could hangar my plane. J.W. [Lynn] sent his son Nathan to the hotel to pick up the keys! After thoroughly researching the weather, we were able to plan a path to avoid all those nasty orange and red radar echoes and decided to forge on before the squall line hit.

J.W. sent Nathan back to retrieve us from the hotel! It was raining now, and they retrieved my plane from the corporate hangar, filled the tanks at the self-service for me, pulled the plane close to the FBO to avoid getting wet, handed me an umbrella for my pre-flight, and gave us bottles of water for the flight. We felt like royalty.

I could go on and on, but you get the picture. I’ll definitely plan a stop there on my next cross-country flight back to PA. Good luck to Nathan on getting his private pilot’s ticket. (Oh yeah, J.W. is also a CFI – Certified Flight Instructor)
